Pierre Prosper, chair of the Seychelles-based Chagossians is planning to lead a group of Chagossians to their islands which in May 2019 were ordered by the UN General Assembly to be returned by Britain to the Chagossians people.
“We need to make sure that right at the beginning it is clear in the agreement that Chagossians should be at the head of the governance of their islands and should not be something that when the islands are transferred the Mauritian government takes the lead and the Chagossians get diluted,” explained Pierre Prosper.
Some 2,000 Chagos islanders were violently forced from the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean in 1960 after Britain leased the main island, Diego Garcia, now a top-secret multi-use American Armed Forces nuclear weapons installation .
Now A UN Resolution (73/295): International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965
25 February 2019 – The British Government is under obligation to end its administration of the Chagos Archipelago “as rapidly as possible” the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial body of the UN, stated in an Advisory Opinion. The decsion calls the continued administration of the archipelago “unlawful,” and “a wrongful act.”
May 22, 2019 The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 73/295 introduced by Senegal on behalf of the Group of African States. The resolution was adopted by 116 votes in favour, 6 against and 56 abstentions and was welcomed by Mauritius, the associations Groupe réfugiés Chagos and UK Chagos Support, India, the United Kingdom’s Leader of the Opposition and also by Madagascar, which could take a similar path for the Scattered Islands, Argentine, for Malvinas, and Cyprus, for Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
Paul Reichler of Foley Hoag has registered in the USA as a foreign agent for the government of Mauritius. He’ll “support Mauritius’ request that the U.S. recognize Mauritius’ sovereignty” over the Chagos Archipelago, a British territory on which the U.S. has a military base, according to a disclosure filing.
