Does SARS2 new Mu-Variant prove our dangerous human folly?

The argument for halting booster shots (because they are criminal?) so that developing nations can get more people vaccinated may have a do-or-die component in the face of the Mu-Variant (B.1.621 a VOI since 30 August), a possible vaccine-escaper mutation of SARS2.

The most prolific SARS2 variant slamming the United States today, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), comes from a developing nation, India, with very low vaccination levels. Now here comes another variant, from Colombia.

Nearly unfettered spread of COVID-19 coupled to inequitable vaccine distribution has allowed the menacing SARS2 virus access to a reported, known, 220+ millions of human hosts according to CSPaC, CSSE/JHU, and IHME.

Consequently, says the World Health Organization, SARS-CoV-2 now has learned the human body, enough to spawn a mutant that works around human defences, say a number of scientists studying the Mu-variant originating in Colombia and now circulating in 50 countries including most states in the USA, as well as Canada, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

The B.1.621 Mu-Variant is at this time a Variant of Interest (VOI) since 30 August 2021 according to the WHO.

Compare the category of the Delta variant, now comprising most cases around the world as a Variant of Concern (VOC) using the World Health Organization’s definitions.

Variants of Concern (VOC) according to the  WHO. including the Delta variant.

  • Increase in transmissibility or detrimental change in COVID-19 epidemiology;
  • Increase in virulence or change in clinical disease presentation; and
  • Decrease in effectiveness of public health and social measures or available diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics.

Variants of Interest (VOI) according to the WHO including the Mu-Variant:

  • Genetic changes that are predicted or known to affect virus characteristics such as transmissibility, disease severity, immune escape, diagnostic or therapeutic escape; and
  • Identified to cause significant community transmission or multiple COVID-19 clusters, in multiple countries with increasing relative prevalence alongside increasing number of cases over time, or other apparent epidemiological impacts to suggest an emerging risk to global public health.

The World Health Organization is urging for ‘Vaccine Equality‘ distribution between developed & developing nations, i.e.: the poor and the rich countries.

Dr. Tedros, World Health Organization Director General “In some low- and middle-income countries, less than 1 per cent of the population is vaccinated – this is contributing to a two-track recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic”, said UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner. “It’s time for swift, collective action – this new COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Dashboard will provide Governments, policymakers and international organisations with unique insights to accelerate the global delivery of vaccines and mitigate the devastating socio-economic impacts of the pandemic.” Photo Credit: WHO : Dr, Tedros, Director-General, world Health Organiozation. Art/Cropping/Enhancement: Rosa Yamamoto / Feminine-Perspective Magazine

“If the Delta-variant is to be used as an example, it will be another five months before the world is in yet another huge wave with the Mu-variant, as we are now with the Delta variant,” suggested Fred Harris, a biostatistician and infectious disease researcher in Singapore.

“But that is purely thumb-and-eyeball navigation on this thing. Who knows what a vaccine-escaping coronavirus is going to do at this early juncture with millions of people having some comorbid symptoms of the Delta variant, a huge portion of those being in the United States.

“For whatever the reason, the Delta variant of the SARS2 coronavirus is clobbering the United States more than any nation on Earth, yet America is the key producer of vaccines.”

“Concomitantly, America has the noisiest antivaxxers and antimaskers who seem in fact to be killing the country. That, I suppose is a cynical observation but it is an observation and not an opinion. COVID-19-caused  deaths will reach 1.1 million in the United States this year, yet that horror was largely preventable,” Dr. Harris added.

“Once again, as if saying it would do any good, the only way ahead is getting vaccinated and wearing N95 masks, adding a face shield in high risk situations, even while vaccinated,” said the expert.

“We do not want to see widespread use of boosters for healthy people who are fully vaccinated,” the World Health Organization’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Berlin last Wednesday
